Itapoá Port Achieves Impressive Import Volume Record in September 2023

In September 2023, the Itapoá Port reached a significant milestone, recording a record import volume of the year: 12,891 containers. Such a figure also represents the second-highest in the port’s history, surpassed only by March 2021 – when 13,129 containers were handled.
Several key sectors primarily drove the past month’s achievement: machinery and its components (constituting 30% of the total), metallurgy and steel (24% of the total), plastics and related products (23%), and chemicals (23%). According to Itapoá Port’s President, Cássio Schreiner, “The year-end is traditionally a strong period for imports, especially due to the year-end festivities and industry preparation for the upcoming year.”
China remains the primary source of imported products, accounting for 83% of the imports that passed through Itapoá Port in September. Schreiner comments, “We currently have the shortest import transit time from Asia among the Southern Brazil cluster ports. This is a significant advantage for importers, providing them greater operational security and production deadlines.”
Chile ranked second, contributing 10% of the total, followed by India in third place with 7%.
September also marked a significant milestone for cross-docking export operations, a method where exporters send loose cargo by truck to be loaded into containers within the terminal. Schreiner says, “This year is already the best in our history, with 2,218 containers handled, beating the total volume for 2022 when we handled 2,047 containers.”
The most significant operations in this category were in the paper and pulp sector, accounting for 64% of the total, and plastics and related products at 36%. “Cross-docking simplifies the customer’s experience, as they don’t need to worry about returning the container to the shipowner, avoiding transportation costs and potential delay-related fines, known as demurrage,” notes the President of Itapoá Port.
The primary destinations for these operations included China (about 60% of the total), Singapore (approximately 24%), and Spain (comprising 18% of the total).
Setting Records:
Itapoá Port initiated the second half of 2023 by breaking its monthly throughput record, reaching 99,396 TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units). This figure is about 10% higher than the 89,880 TEUs handled by the terminal in July 2022. The same record has already been broken twice this year, in March and May, marking a highly positive semester with an 18% growth compared to the same period last year.
