On Friday, November 11, the Port of Itapoá received the largest ship in its history. With 347m in length overall (LOA), the Singapore-flagged APL Yangshan by American President Lines. The vessel is 45.20 m wide and has a capacity of 10,960 TEUs.
Its route includes several Asian and Brazilian ports on a line called SSO (Sino South America), offered by PIL (Pacific International Lines), CMA CGM and Cosco. Its last call before arriving in Brazil was Singapore, from where it started the journey toward Santos. From there, it goes to Paranaguá and then to Itapoá.
The arrival of ever larger ships is a new reality, according to the operations manager of the Itapoá port, Thiago Santos. “We have very good operational conditions to receive these vessels, thanks to our structure and organization, the excellent navigation conditions in Babitonga Bay, and the high level of port pilotage that serves us,” he explained.
Vessels over 300 meters in length account for more than 50% of the terminal’s operation, including simultaneous operations and maneuvers in the access channel.
Previously, the largest ship to dock at the Itapoá port arrived in May 2017: the Hyundai Loyalty, 340 meters long and 45 meters wide, with a storage capacity of 8,600 TEUs. The vessel also sails under the flag of Singapore and is operated by Eastern Pacific Shipping Pte. Ltd.
