Located in São Luís, the Itaqui Port will receive R$ 1.1 billion in investment for the third phase of the expansion of the Maranhão Grain Terminal (Tegram).
The project, which the Ministry of Ports and Airports approved, will increase the grain handling capacity from the current 15 million to 23.5 million tons per year—mainly soybeans, corn, and soybean meal.
A new berth will be built at the terminal, strengthening Itaqui’s position as the largest shipping point in the so-called Northern Arc.
The Tegram expansion will meet the growing demand from agribusiness in the regions of Maranhão, Piauí, and Tocantins (known as Mapito), as well as areas in northeastern Mato Grosso, Goiás, and Bahia.
“This expansion consolidates our commitment to lead [at Itaqui Port] not only in exports but also in practices that respect the environment and position Maranhão as a national and international reference,” said Governor Carlos Brandão (PSB).
The National Agency for Waterway Transportation (Antaq) has yet to give the expansion project its final approval.
The Tegram-Itaqui Consortium, which operates the terminal, is formed by four groups: Terminal Corredor Norte (TCN), Viterra Logistics and Port Terminals, Corredor Logistics and Infrastructure (CLI), and ALZ Grãos (Amaggi, Louis Dreyfus Company, and Zen-Noh Grain Port Terminals).
Environmental actions
In addition to its significance for agribusiness, Itaqui Port is recognized for its environmental efforts and leadership in establishing the Brazilian Alliance for Decarbonization of Ports.
The alliance, coordinated by Maranhão, promotes sustainability and innovation actions among public and private ports, energy companies, startups, and universities.
According to the Maranhão government, Itaqui Port has already implemented the following sustainability initiatives:
- The combustion vehicle fleet will be replaced with electric and hybrid vehicles by 2026.
- Replacement of gasoline with ethanol in the port’s fleet.
- OPS (Onshore Power Supply) project offers clean energy to docked ships.
- Hiring buses with Euro 6 technology to transport employees, reducing pollutant emissions.
- Environmental awards for companies that adopt responsible practices at the port complex.
