‘I’ve never seen anything like this’: the scarcity of products that affects the world – and your pocket
Aug, 16, 2021 Posted by Ruth HollardWeek 202133
It is difficult to imagine that in the United States, one of the richest countries in the world, there is a shortage of some products. But buying a new car, furniture or building materials is no longer an easy task in the country.
In many cases, consumers have to wait for months before getting the product they are looking for.
That’s because container congestion at the world’s major ports is causing intermittent disruptions in supply chains.
Since many companies keep low inventories in order to reduce costs, when situations like these occur, they are left without the necessary products needed to meet demand.
This demand for products has grown in recent months in the context of the economic reactivation after 2020, which represented one of the worst global recessions in decades.
The problem is that the pandemic changed the rhythm of the flow of national trade and, when consumption increases in several countries at the same time, the ports, maritime routes, trains, and planes that transport the products cannot keep up.
Not even some industries that produce essential parts for the manufacture of other products, such as microchips, are able to return to their normal pace.
