Jan de Nul dredges drought stricken Paraná river to facilitate grain exports

The Argentine government has closed a short-term agreement with Belgian company Jan de Nul to dredge the Paraná river, a government source said, a move aimed at helping grain-exporting ships navigate the waterway, which is currently at historically low levels. Paraná is at its lowest point in 77 years due to a severe drought in Brazil where the river begins. With the low volume affecting shipments, the state has plans to take on a more direct river management role, fueling industry concerns about possible rate increases.
Argentina is a major global supplier of wheat, the world’s second largest exporter of corn and the largest exporter of soybean oil and bran, used to feed swine and poultry from Europe to Southeast Asia. About 80% of agricultural exports go from Paraná to the ocean.
