January exports keep the spirits high in the rice industry

According to the Brazilian Rice Industry Association (Abiarroz), 2022 began with a positive outlook for Brazilian rice on the international stage, with two European countries – Spain and Portugal – among the most important import markets (14).
In January, rice exports (husk base) totaled 84,200 tonnes compared to 09,800 tonnes shipped in the same month last year. Revenue totaled US$44 million, compared to US$9.5 million in the first month of 2021, says Abiarroz, based on data from the Ministry of Economy.
In addition to Spain and Portugal, four other countries stood out in terms of purchases of Brazilian rice in January: Costa Rica, Peru, Senegal, and Venezuela.
“Exports of processed rice, particularly to Peru, drove revenue up 400%,” says Carolina Telles Matos, Abiarroz Exports manager. “The importance of putting the Mercosur-European Union agreement into practice is demonstrated by the fact that Spain and Portugal are not traditional export destinations in the rice trade map.”
The rice market should be more heated this year in Carolina’s assessment. “We should have a more intense 2022 than 2021, mainly due to the renewal of the Brazilian Rice Project and the new trade promotion and training actions to promote Brazilian processed rice abroad.”
Despite this, Gustavo Trevisan, Abiarroz’s director of international affairs, claims that logistical issues persist, putting pressure on sea freight values and container rental prices. “We anticipate a return to normalcy in the second half of this year.”
Last month, rice imports were 18,900 tons representing US$ 9.6 million. In January 2021, Brazil imported 70,500 tons of the product, which was equivalent to US$ 44 million.
