Japanese company to deliver ultra-modern FPSO to Brazil

The FPSO Almirante Barroso MV32, one of the largest FPSO designs in the world, has been completed and delivered in Dalian, Liaoning Province, northeast China. The vessel was the 11th FPSO project adapted by COSCO Shipping Heavy Industry (Dalian) for Japanese company MODEC Inc, a global provider, and operator of offshore floating platforms.
China COSCO Shipping Corp is one of the world’s major container shipping firms. The delivery increased China’s cutting-edge marine engineering equipment’s core competitiveness.
The vessel was modified from a very large crude carrier (VLCC) 332 meters long, 58 meters wide, and 31 meters deep.
Production capacity of MODEC’s new FPSO
Modec’s FPSO is one of the largest to be put into operation, with a depth of 1,900 meters, a storage capacity of 1.4 million barrels, and a processing capacity of 150,000 barrels of crude oil and 212 million cubic meters of natural gas per day.
It can also produce 240,000 barrels of water injection per day and eventually operate in Brazil’s Búzios pre-salt oil field.
Several functions were integrated into the FPSO project, including production processing, storage and unloading, staff housing, and production command. The MODEC specialist describes it as “a large offshore oil processing facility” since it can work continuously in the offshore oil field for 28 years without anchoring or maintenance.
State-of-the-art technology
The control room was designed and built according to the highest technical standards in Brazil and can accommodate 160 people at a time with a standard of living close to a five-star hotel.
In the first five months of 2022, China imported 217 million tonnes of crude oil, down 1.7% from the same period in 2021, while the price per tonne topped 4,463 yuan, or an increase of 55 .6%, according to Chinese customs data.
This is the 15th FPSO/FSO that MODEC will supply to Brazil and MODEC’s 8th “pre-salt” FPSO after FPSO Cidade de Angra dos Reis MV22, FPSO Cidade de São Paulo MV23, FPSO Cidade de Mangaratiba MV24, FPSO Cidade de Itaguaí MV26, FPSO Cidade de Caraguatatuba MV27, as well as the last two units, FPSO Carioca MV30 and FPSO Guanabara MV31, currently under construction.
FPSO Almirante Barroso MV32
This will be the 5th FPSO deployed in the Búzios field but the first production unit chartered for the region. The Búzios field is 100% explored by Petrobras and is located 180 km off the coast of Rio de Janeiro, in the giant “pre-salt” region of the Santos Basin, Brazil, at a water depth of approximately 1,900 m.
MODEC is in charge of the FPSO’s engineering, procurement, construction, mobilization charter, and operations, including topsides processing equipment as well as hull and marine systems. In addition, SOFEC, Inc., a MODEC group firm, will design and deliver the floating unit’s spread mooring system.
