JBS sells Brazil’s first ever chicken cargo to India

Seara, a business unit of the world’s largest meat processor JBS SA, became the first Brazilian company authorized to export chicken products to India, according to Reuters. India’s chicken consumption is forecast to rise to 2.23kg per capita in 2019, up from 2.18kg last year as disposable incomes rise, according to the United Nations’ Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).
JBS’s first shipment of chicken leg quarters and thighs is scheduled for the next few weeks according to Reuters; the Port of Jawaharlal Nehru in Mumbai will receive the cargo.
The outbreak of African swine fever in China is reshaping the global meat landscape, according to the US based International Poultry Council; Poultry is likely to become the most sought after meat protein in the world.
As per DataLiner, Navegantes was Seara’s most favored port to despatch chicken cargo in 2018, at 17,301 TEU, followed by Santos at 16,372 TEU and Paranaguá at 13,611 TEU. The following graph shows the top five chicken exporting ports for Seara in the last five years:
DatamarNews reported JBS SA might not continue to be the sole supplier of McDonald’s hamburger as Marfrig is in the advanced stage of negotiations with the company.
