Uruguay’s National Ports Administration (ANP) informed the Port of Sauce de Juan Lacaze development work will be completed this month. The port, situated 150 km west of Montevideo, stopped shipping general cargo in 2012. The local government decided to revamp the port after the local Fanapel Paper Mill began to struggle in 2016.
The work, which began in February 2018, involved the construction of an L-shaped dock to accommodate RoRo vessels, requiring an investment of US$2m. The port has a 98m long pier with a 4m draft.
ANP also informed that Paraguayan Independent Shipping Lines (ISL) is interested in calling at the port. Currently, the port is only moving fuel for Uruguay’s state oil company, Ancap. ANP mentioned maintenance work will be carried out by the same dredging company deployed in the Martín García Canal.
