Vessels known as Powerships built by the company Karpowership will begin placing themselves in Rio de Janeiro’s Port of Itaguaí. The first ship arrived on July 23; the others will follow during the week. It is expected that electricity-producing activities will begin soon after. The commissioning tests of the transmission lines, which span 14.6 kilometers and connect to the Furnas substation, are also nearing completion, allowing operations to take place within this time frame safely.

The project is located in the Industrial District of Santa Cruz (RJ). The project was one of the winners of Aneel’s reserve energy auction, held in October 2021, and is part of the federal government’s strategic planning to ensure national energy security in the long term, in addition to having the capacity to generate 560 MW and supply about 2 million people. The company follows all the parameters and rules of the licensing process, having already provided all the socio-environmental studies required by Inea.

The ships will be powered by natural gas (up to 40% less polluting than diesel or coal, which is essential for energy transition) through a Floating Storage and Regasification Unit (FSRU) positioned during this period in the region. The project is temporary, with a total duration of 44 months. The infrastructure is easy to mobilize and demobilize and has a much smaller impact than traditional thermoelectric construction processes.

The vessels by Karpowership feature high energy efficiency. The engines installed on the vessels have state-of-the-art technology and were manufactured using technology developed in countries such as Germany and Finland.

“It should be highlighted that this technology option will allow Brazil to consider using similar generator-ships for the gas and pre-salt markets. These are possibilities that are opening up for Brazil, possibilities that are critical for a world that must address the issues of supplying energy in a safe and ecologically responsible manner,” assesses Gilberto Bruno, project director of Karpowership Brazil.

Environmental conscience

The project will also include an additional, voluntary environmental compensation mechanism in partnership with the city of Itaguaí to reforest degraded areas, following corporate social responsibility and commitment and respect for sustainability and the local community. Native Atlantic Forest species, more specifically mangroves and sandbank, will be reintroduced.
