Korean authorities seek to deepen relations with Santa Catarina ports

Members of the business mission from Santa Catarina state industry federation Fiesc in Asia this week visited the two largest ports in South Korea. They met with port authorities to discuss ways to deepen commercial relations.
In the city of Busan, the second largest in the country, the intent to develop the current partnership was formalized by President Joon-Suk Kang upon receiving the President of Fiesc, Mário Cezar de Aguiar, the Brazilian Ambassador, Márcia Abreu, and businessmen from Santa Catarina.
An impressive project to expand the port area, with the implementation of new recreational and cultural activities, is planned. These projects are part of a mega-initiative that aims to make Busan the site of the 2030 World Expo.
The Koreans’ heightened interest is due to two factors. The first is the current state of the ports of Navegantes and Itapoá and the expansion of the port capacity of Busan. For example, Navegantes had a 1.1 million container throughput in 2022, while Busan closed the year with more than 22 million.
Secondly, the interest is also due to the news that a Korean company has installed itself in Santa Catarina, and another has plans to settle in the northern part of the state.
Incheon
The second largest port in South Korea is located in Incheon, near the national capital.
The Santa Catarina delegation was received by the Vice-President of the port complex, Jong-Kil Kim, who showed a video about the port’s expansion plans, also including several programs related to new berths, and an impressive project with a marina, cruise terminal, ecological park, leisure spaces, art, and cultural activity rooms.
According to the business leader, South Korea has focused decades on generating employment, education, and professional work. Now, the population wants a better quality of life, which has led the port to redefine itself so that everyone can enjoy cultural and tourist activities.
Jong-Kil Kim was invited by President Mário Cezar de Aguiar to visit the ports of Santa Catarina. He expressed interest, stating that he knows all the major port regions in the world but has never been to Latin America.
He also noted that Incheon already maintains commercial cargo transport lines with the ports of Navegantes and Itapoá.
