Kosher slaughter stands in the way of Brazilian poultry exports to Israel

The Israeli market, which opened up for Brazilian poultry in August 2023, has yet to see any shipments of the product. According to Ricardo Santin, president of the Brazilian Animal Protein Association (ABPA), the lack of exports is due to Brazilian companies’ need to adapt to the kosher slaughter protocol required by Jewish authorities.

Kosher slaughter follows Jewish dietary laws, which dictate specific methods for meat processing. It must be performed by a shochet (a person trained in Jewish law), the animal must be slaughtered quickly and precisely to minimize suffering, and all blood must be fully drained. Additionally, a separate and dedicated production line is required to ensure compliance with religious requirements.

According to Santin, the kosher protocol demands that companies have an exclusive production line. The slaughter facilities need to undergo technical adjustments, including construction modifications, a currently underway process.
