Lack of maritime containers drives air transport

The demand for international cargo transport by planes is quite heated. The volume of cargo transported from abroad to the Brazilian market and from Brazil abroad reached 625,700 tons this year in August – an all-time record in the history of ANAC (the national civil aviation agency). Compared to 2019, the volume increased by 13.5%.

This movement is explained, in part, by the lack of maritime transport containers, a mode that is cheaper than air. It also signals that many companies are getting back to resuming business following the most difficult months of the pandemic.

Airline cargo revenue this year already exceeds that recorded in 2019. In addition to cargo planes, companies use the bellies of planes that transport passengers.

Latam is the market leader in the transport of international parcels in Brazil. In August it had 16.4% of that market, adding Latam, Lan Chile, Absa, and Lan Cargo, according to data from ANAC. In second place is American Atlas, with 12.2% of the market share, followed by Korean Air Lines, with 5%.
