On September 23rd, the federal revenue service located a large number of ammunition parts for firearms and specific tools for assembling weapons during an inspection of imported cargo inside a customs terminal in the Port of Santos on the coast of São Paulo.

According to the municipality’s customs agents, the ammunition was located during the verification of an imported cargo declared as unaccompanied baggage – shipments brought into the country or sent abroad as cargo and supported by a bill of lading or equivalent document.

As explained by the federal revenue service, the shipment includes projectiles and bullet casings of various calibers and was imported without the consent of the Brazilian Army. A large part is intended for use in long weapons such as rifles, or of restricted calibers for use by security forces.

The inspection took place within the scope of Operation Outlet, started in March of this year, to combat the shipment of goods from abroad to Brazil falsely declared as unaccompanied baggage in order to escape taxation and inspection by the consenting agencies. The operation is also to combat the sending of prohibited goods or personal goods irregularly, that is, without the sender and recipient reporting the shipment to the federal revenue service.
