Operating in Brazil since 2015, Svitzer – the world leader in port towing services – saw a strategic market in Ceará and began operating at Porto do Pecém.

The multinational is investing US$ 30 million in the construction of four vessels, two of which will make up the fleet at the Ceará terminal.

Daniel Reedtz Cohen, executive director of Svitzer Brasil, points out that the company is optimistic about the expansion of the operation to the Port of Pecém and Suape (PE), the activities of which began simultaneously with the start of activities in Ceará.

He details that the choice of new destinations was based on the perception that several clients served by Svitzer in the South and Southeast also maintain operations in the Northeast, especially in the two ports in question.

“We entered the Brazilian market six years ago and during this period we managed to build a solid and prosperous business. So, until recently, we were operating in five ports. Through conversations with these customers, we evaluated the next step,” he says Cohen.

He argues that the growth rate of port movement in the Port of Pecém, both in imports and exports, has been highlighted even during the pandemic. “Obviously, there was an impact, but what we are seeing is that mainly exports continued to be strong, and not only in the South, but we are also seeing the importance of the ports in the North and Northeast,” he adds.

Initially, Svitzer signed a long-term contract with Maersk for operation at the Port of Pecém. The company is also already negotiating new contracts at the terminal with its existing customer base, in addition to prospecting new opportunities.
