Liquid bulk transportation and cabotage shipping stood out at Suape in 2021

The Suape Industrial Port Complex finished 2021 by taking the national leadership position in liquid bulk handling and cabotage shipping. In addition, Suape consolidated itself as the largest container hub in the North and Northeast of Brazil, ranking at the top among public port terminals in both regions. The National Waterway Transportation Agency (Antaq) provided the information above.

Despite the fact that Petrobrás submitted the Abreu e Lima Oil Refinary (Rnest) to mandatory maintenance last year, resulting in a drop in general handling at Suape, the port managed to remain the top port in terms of liquid bulk handling among all Brazilian wharfs.

The Pernambuco state port handled 14.9 million tons in 2021 compared to 14.3 million in the Port of Santos and to 9.8 million in Porto do Itaqui (MA). Liquid bulk accounted for  67.8% all cargo handled in Suape.

The figures brought forth by cabotage shipping also stood out. Last year, 13.9 million of the 22 million tons handled by Suape had their origin or destination in other Brazilian ports.

In terms of container handling, the state-owned port became the primary cargo hub in the North and Northeast regions of Brazil after handling 518,581 TEUs in 2021, a record in the history of Pernambuco.

Other cargoes performed admirably in 2021 as well. Vehicle handling increased by 20%, from 39,922 to 47,841. Loose general cargo increased by 22%, totaling 492,927 tons, which includes non-containerized products such as steel sheets, bagged sugar, vehicles, wind turbines, among others. Solid bulk (wheat and coal coke) increased by 22.3% to 719,174 tons.
