A ferry loaded with at least nine containers sank in the Port of Chibatão, located in Colonia Oliveira Machado, in the South Zone of Manaus at around 11 pm on November 29th.
According to local boatmen, a steel cable broke, causing the accident. The ferry was loaded with containers with various goods. In images, shared on social networks, it is possible to see several television boxes in the waters of the Rio Negro.
On the morning of November 30th, a winch and tugboats worked to remove the materials that sank.
In a statement, JF de Oliveira Navegação, which is part of the Chibatão group, informed that there were no injuries during the accident. “Actions are being taken to remove the trucks from the shore of the port and to float the module. Fortunately, there were no human losses, only material losses”, says the note. The amount of the loss was not informed.
Also according to the note, the accident happened during a maneuver for boarding container wagons. “One of the wagons later tipped over at 2:48 am and sank into the river.”
Oil on the Rio Negro
Due to the accident, an amount of oil spilled into the Rio Negro, but barriers were placed to prevent the material from spreading outside the perimeter of the port.
