Localfrio grows 31% and breaks cargo handling records

Rodrigo Casado’s tenure as CEO of Localfrio has spanned a little more than six months and yielded notable results across the board.
The company hit cargo handling records at the bonded terminals of Suape (PE) and Itajaí (SC). Besides, the terminal located in Guarujá (SP) resumed growing.
With all these achievements, Localfrio ended last year with revenues of R$ 418 million, showing a growth of 31.1% in relation to 2020. The expectation is to end 2022 with an average increase of 20% in revenue.
“We ended the year with extremely satisfactory results. We still have a lot to conquer, at all levels, but these numbers certainly give us new impetus to achieve new goals”, summarizes Rodrigo Casado, CEO and president of Localfrio.
Localfrio’s Ebitda responded to these positive indicators. It went from practically zero in 2020 to R$ 55.3 million last year.
Cargo handling at Suape, Itajaí, and Guarujá
Localfrio started 2022 with record imports at its bonded terminals in Suape (PE) and Itajaí (SC).
In the Pernambuco port, the company handled 1703 containers in January, reaching the highest cargo volume in the unit’s history.
The majority of imported goods during the period were solar panel modules, tires, synthetic rubbers, motorcycles, alcoholic beverages, and fabrics.
In Itajaí, 1353 containers were handled in January, marking yet another unprecedented milestone at a Localfrio terminal. Among the items imported during this period were wines, tires, dental products, machines, and solar panels.
At the Guarujá (SP) bonded terminal, the company was able to go beyond the pre-pandemic volume of imports. Localfrio handled nearly 39,100 containers last year compared to 33,200 in 2019, representing an increase of 16%.
Fertilizers, chemical and pharmaceutical products, alcoholic beverages, and solar panel components accounted for most of the imported goods in the period.
Growth factors
Part of Localfrio’s growth can be attributed to importers’ strategy of delaying cargo nationalization in order to avoid paying taxes and other fees.
Other factors have also driven the search for space in Localfrio’s retroport terminals. Special warehousing customs regimes represent one of the major benefits provided by Localfrio’s terminals.
Through that, importers can fractionally clear their cargo, which allows for better planning of the flow of internalization of goods according to demand.
In addition, the special regime allows goods to be stored for up to two years with a total suspension of taxes, with the possibility of re-export to other countries.
Another factor that has stimulated the search for storage at Localfrio’s terminals is the increased incidence of demurrage (fee charged by shipowners for delays in returning containers), which can strongly impact import costs.
Localfrio’s storage capacity and agility in operations have helped alleviate these costs for customers.
Localfrio is the only company in the sector with bonded terminals located in the main maritime foreign trade hubs in the country (Santos, Suape and Itajaí).
