Maceió Port has announced an investment package that will be implemented by 2027. The actions include the construction of a new headquarters, as well as works in the areas of infrastructure, security, and port logistics. The project is expected to receive more than R$150 million in investments from public and private investments.
In an interview with Movimento Econômico, Maceió Port’s administrator, Diogo Holanda, detailed the projects that are expected to position the terminal among the most modern in the region, ensuring greater competitiveness and operational capacity for both cargo operations and for accommodating tourists arriving on cruise ships.
According to Holanda, R$30 million of the port’s resources will be invested to construct the new administrative headquarters, as well as to carry out operational sector renovations, purchase 35 defensive units, improve the security of the port facilities (in line with the ISPS Code), and acquire a new scale. “The new headquarters will cover 1,000 m² and is expected to be on a floating platform. Architect Humberta Farias developed it, and we estimate it will take 12 to 18 months to complete. All these works will make Maceió Port much more competitive, ensuring both internal and operational safety and offering a new administrative headquarters that adds significant value,” said Diogo Holanda.
In addition to the port’s resources, another R$125 million in private investments is planned for other works. One of these projects is revitalizing the port’s waterfront, which the Maceió City Hall is executing. The funds will also ensure internal paving works, the acquisition of cranes, a Ship Loader—equipment used for the continuous transport of solid bulk materials—and other recovery works.
“The Port is investing in modernization to further boost Alagoas and Brazil’s development. I believe all these investments will directly impact the sector,” Diogo Holanda affirmed.
Growing Tourist and Commercial Activities at the Port
In recent years, Maceió Port has seen increased passenger and cargo movements. Between 2021 and 2024, cargo handling grew by 25%, and in the first two months of 2025, the increase reached 22%. Sugar, cane molasses, copper ore, and fertilizers are some of the main products exported by the terminal, placing Alagoas on the export route of global economic giants such as China, the United States, and various European countries.
Tourism also plays an important role at the port, with a growing number of tourists disembarking in Maceió. During the 2022/2023 season, Maceió received an average of 75,000 tourists who disembarked during vessel stops. Eight ships made 21 stops in that season, generating around R$45.4 million for the economy.
In the 2023/2024 season, 10 vessels made 28 stops in Maceió, generating a financial movement of R$80 million. The season ends in April and is expected to host 14 cruises making 33 stops, generating values close to R$100 million.
“The numbers show that we are working to ensure that Maceió Port is more agile and competitive, and, of course, highlight its importance for tourism with the cruises docking at our terminals and for the entire cargo movement that contributes to our state’s economy by connecting Alagoas to the world,” said Diogo Holanda.
Alagoas Port Expected to Gain Administrative Autonomy from RN Later This Year
Another development anticipated by the port administration in Alagoas is the Senate vote on the bill creating the Companhia Docas de Alagoas. The bill has already been approved by the Chamber of Deputies and will grant the Companhia Docas of Rio Grande do Norte administrative and financial autonomy, resolving a decades-long impasse.
According to the bill approved by the Chamber of Deputies, the new company, a private legal entity in the form of a corporation, will remain linked to the Ministry of Ports and Airports. All assets and liabilities related to the organized administration of Maceió Port—including technical, bibliographic, and documentary collections—will be transferred to the new company.
According to the government, even the Federal Court of Accounts (TCU) has determined that the financial autonomy issue of Maceió Port must be resolved within the Codern framework.
“Our expectation is that the bill will be voted on in the Senate in the coming months, ending this controversy that has persisted since the 1990s. Since taking over the port’s management, this has been one of our top priorities,” affirmed Holanda.
