According to the Brazilian Association of the Machinery and Equipment Industry (Abimaq), the net revenue invoiced by this industry registered a 6.8% drop in March 2022 compared to the same month of 2021. The total monthly income was R$ 25.1 billion.
The industry also saw a 5.3% decrease in sales in the first quarter of 2022, following a year-over-year increase of 21.6% from January to December. The total revenue for the quarter was R$67.4 billion.
Despite the poor results compared to the previous year, the sector saw a 14.3% increase in net sales in February, the second consecutive month of improvement following a series of losses that began in September 2021.
“The numbers observed in the first quarter of the year point to the deceleration of industrial activity, which began in the last quarter of 2021, mainly in sectors linked to household consumption. This downward trend negatively impacts productive investments in some segments,” said the entity in a note.
Exports
Exports grew 45.3% in March, compared to the same month of the previous year. There was a rise of 36.6% in the first quarter compared to the same period in 2021 and 15.4% compared to February. The sector’s total exports were US$ 1,011.87 million in March 2022 and US$ 2,606.32 in the quarter.
“Exports experienced a strong recovery in the second quarter of 2021, which continued into 2022”, evaluated Abimaq.
On the other hand, machinery and technical equipment imports grew 9.1% in March compared to February and 8.8% year on year. The cumulative growth rate for the year was 15.9%. Imports totaled US$ 2,136.60 million in March, with a total of US$ 5,937.48 for the quarter.
