A.P. Moller-Maersk (Maersk) has signed agreements with three shipyards for the order of a total of 20 container ships equipped with dual-fuel engines. Together, these vessels will have a capacity of 300,000 TEUs. With these orders, Maersk completes the shipbuilding orders announced in the August 2024 update of its fleet renewal plan.

“We are pleased to have signed agreements for 20 vessels, thus completing the acquisition of 300,000 TEUs of capacity announced in August. These orders are part of our ongoing fleet renewal program and are in line with our commitment to decarbonization, as all vessels will be equipped with dual-fuel engines with the intention of operating them with low-emission fuels,” says Anda Cristescu, Head of Chartering and New Builds at Maersk.

All 20 vessels, ranging in size from 9,000 to 17,000 TEUs, will be equipped with dual-fuel propulsion systems using liquefied natural gas.

“Due to their different sizes, the ships will be able to serve many functions within our future network and provide us with a lot of deployment flexibility when they are ready to join our fleet. Once implemented, they will replace the existing capacity in our fleet,” explains Anda Cristescu.

The first vessels are scheduled for delivery in 2028, with the final delivery taking place in 2030.

The August fleet update also included the announcement of plans to charter a series of dual-fuel vessels powered by methanol and liquefied natural gas, totaling 500,000 TEUs of capacity. Maersk has now finalized these charter agreements with several tonnage providers. When gradually implemented, the chartered vessels will replace the existing capacity.
