APM Terminals, a subsidiary of the Maersk group, has expressed interest in purchasing a section of the shipyard Estaleiro Atlântico Sul (EAS) in the Port of Suape in Pernambuco.
The intention is, if the transaction is finalized, to establish a container terminal there. APM Terminals presented a binding offer to EAS: “APM Terminals sees great potential in the region, which goes hand-in-hand with customers’ increased demand for a new container terminal service in Suape. We are deeply convinced that our investment would contribute to the development of a modern and competitive terminal that would significantly reduce costs, improving efficiency and the level of service, thanks to qualified labor and the introduction of an innovative operating standard“, says the company, in a note, to act as a stalking horse bidder (on behalf of an anonymous third party) in the acquisition of an Isolated Production Unit (UPI-B Cais Sul), which comprises part of the area of the EAS shipyard, including its south pier.
The new terminal would form part of APM Terminals’ extensive network of container terminals worldwide. According to the Journal of Commerce, the company has 72 facilities in 69 countries.
The group argues that the purchase should provide opportunities for the local community, namely through the creation of direct and indirect jobs. It is reported that the corporation, headquartered in The Hague, Netherlands, employs roughly 20,000 people.
“Although our intention to purchase the area is solid, we are still negotiating the specifics of the prospective sale with EAS. The area’s sale will be contingent on the success of the UPI-B Cais Sul auction, within the scope of the EAS’s legal recovery process, and the fulfillment of certain previous criteria (including approval from the competent government agencies),” APM Terminals adds.
The corporation claims to be discussing specific measures to make this project viable in parallel with the State of Pernambuco, as well as the schedule for dredging the access channel and the turn in the basin required to access the shipyard area in Suape today.
