The A.P. Moller-Maersk Group has signed three cooperation agreements with the China Classification Society (CCS), signaling another step in the journey towards de-carbonization. The agreement was signed during an event at the organization’s headquarters in Beijing on the 27th, by the managing director of Maersk China Limited, Jens Eskelund, and the vice president of CCS, Sun Feng.
The agreements will be valid for an initial period of two years and focus on scientific and technological innovation projects, green fuel availability and infrastructure, as well as carbon neutral vessel projects. Maersk and CCS will invite research institutes to form a joint force for the project.
“Maersk has set a clear and ambitious goal of becoming carbon neutral by 2050. China, as the world’s leading shipbuilding and maritime construction nation, will be a crucial partner in ensuring our industry can effectively respond to the challenge of climate change,” says Maersk China Limited Managing Director Jens Eskelund.
According to Eskelund, the company is eager to “explore the opportunities for international cooperation in sustainable and zero-carbon transport”. For the Danish ambassador to China, Thomas Østrup Møller, maritime de-carbonization “can only be successfully achieved through strong international collaboration and knowledge exchange”.
