Mango exports produced in Bahia break record in 2023

Brazilian mango exports are expected to end the year on a high note, and the good numbers from Bahia have contributed to this scenario. Bahia is the largest fruit exporter, and in contrast to last year, international shipments are expected to grow. The output is already 19% higher than in 2022. In terms of revenue, shipments until October are already the highest in history – 36% higher, according to the Center for Advanced Studies in Applied Economics (Cepea-SP).
According to information from the Department of Agriculture, Livestock, Irrigation, Fisheries, and Aquaculture (Seagri), fruit production in the São Francisco Valley, which includes cities in Bahia and Pernambuco, is not expected to surpass the record of 2021 – which was 272.5 thousand tonnes, contrary to expectations of a bumper harvest. This is due to early-year rains and above-normal temperatures in the second semester. Nevertheless, significant volumes of mangoes have been leaving the region for the international market.

Cooperation
One of the main requirements of the international market to allow the entry of fruits is phytosanitary measures, which consist of control measures or precautions that prevent or reduce the damage caused by the presence of pests.
Since April 2023, technical cooperation agreements signed between Seagri, the Brazilian Micro and Small Business Support Service (Sebrae), the National Rural Learning Service (Senar), and the Brazilian Association of Fruit Producers and Exporters (Abrafrutas) have provided guidance and monitored the fruit fly, the main pest threatening mango plantations in the northern region of Bahia.
“A total of R$3,000 has been invested, through three cooperation agreements, in this fight against the fruit fly. This partnership, orchestrated by Seagri, benefits small producers who now have the conditions to sell their products better. And often, these are the ones who help the large producer close the shipment to send abroad. In other words, it is a win-win relationship established through the work of the Government of Bahia and its partners,” explains the Secretary of Agriculture of Bahia, Wallison Tum.
Other factors
When analyzing logistics, this year, there has been a reduction in freight prices and greater regularity of ships, making shipments to routes such as the United States and Europe viable, according to Valexp. This entity promotes the international products of the São Francisco Valley.
Another important factor impacting Brazilian shipments in 2023 is the limitation of production in competing countries, especially in South America. The low production in Ecuador and Peru, which are expected to reduce shipments to the United States due to the influence of El Niño (which raised average temperatures and negatively affected production), is expected to benefit the demand for Brazilian fruit between October and December, the Ecuadorian window period, according to Cepea.
