Maranhão-based Itaqui Port sees 6% surge in Jan-Sep cargo throughput

The Port of Itaqui in Maranhão, Brazil, had a cargo throughput of 27.5 million tonnes from January to September 2023, marking a 6% increase from the previous year. The standout feature was the corn shipments, which reached 1.4 million tonnes in September, surpassing the previous record of 1.3 million tonnes in the same month of 2022.
According to the Maranhão Port Administration Company (Emap), solid and liquid bulk and general cargo drove the increase in cargo movement in the first nine months of the year.
From January to September 2023, 19.8 million tonnes of solid bulk were handled, showing a 10% increase compared to the same period in 2022. In terms of liquid bulk, the port complex handled 6.5 million tons during this period.
Regarding general cargo, in September alone, 3.52 million tons were recorded.
