The Government of Maranhão and Petrobras discussed the potential of the Itaqui Port in São Luís for handling oil and derivatives in the region.
The meeting occurred on Thursday (14) at the port terminal, where Governor Carlos Brandão provided an overview of Itaqui’s entire infrastructure to Petrobras President Jean Paul Prates.
Accompanying Prates during his visit to the Itaqui Port were Governor Carlos Brandão, Gilberto Lins, President of the Maranhão Port Administration Company (Emap), and Allan Kardec, President of the Maranhão Gas Company (Gasmar).
Governor Carlos Brandão underscored Petrobras as one of Itaqui Port’s primary partners, emphasizing the necessity of bolstering this collaboration.
“We took advantage of Petrobras President Jean Paul Prates’ visit to Maranhão to highlight the potential of the Itaqui Port. Tomorrow, we will convene in a meeting of the Legal Amazon Consortium to discuss oil and natural gas production on the Brazilian equatorial margin. Maranhão is hosting this dialogue because we potentially possess pre-salt reserves that require examination, discussion, and assessment of their exploration prospects,” stated Governor Carlos Brandão.
Jean Paul Prates emphasized Petrobras’ status as the largest excise taxpayer in the state, emphasizing the importance of discussing the company’s port operations and their significance for the Maranhão economy.
“The operations conducted by Petrobras at the Itaqui Port function essentially as a virtual refinery, as a considerable portion of the diesel and other fuels necessary to address Brazil’s deficit are imported here. Therefore, it is imperative that we collaborate to explore the full potential of the equatorial margin, encompassing not only oil, gas, and energy but also renewable sources, with a focus on sustainability and responsibility,” remarked Jean Paul Prates.
Gilberto Lins, President of Emap, capitalized on the visit to the Itaqui Port to reinforce the existing partnership with Petrobras.
“Emap and the Itaqui Port stand ready for the new investments Petrobras intends to undertake in our port terminal. We have already apprised the president of our growth prospects, aiming to further develop this region,” affirmed Gilberto Lins.
Currently, according to Petrobras, the Itaqui Port handles between 400,000 and 500,000 cubic meters of oil and derivatives.
