The Brazilian government will not be renewing the maritime transport agreements with Argentina and Uruguay. The decision was made by the Foreign Trade Chamber (CAMEX) in December 2020, and was already announced in February this year, but only formalized this Wednesday, September 8th, in a decree published in the Official Federal Gazette.
The act “makes public the decision, by the Federative Republic of Brazil, not to renew the validity of the Maritime Transport Agreement signed on June 12, 1975, between the Federative Republic of Brazil and the Oriental Republic of Uruguay, promulgated by Decree No. 78,621, of October 25, 1976; and the Maritime Transport Agreement signed in Buenos Aires, on August 15, 1985, between the Federative Republic of Brazil and the Argentine Republic, promulgated by Decree No. 99,040, of 6 of March 1990”.
The agreement with Uruguay ends on October 7, 2021, and the agreement with Argentina ends on February 5, 2022.
In a statement, the General Secretariat of the Presidency highlighted that “the measure contributes to the process of Brazil’s accession to the Organization for Cooperation and Development (OECD), which is one of the priorities of Brazilian foreign policy, in addition to encouraging competition and competitiveness in the provision of services in the sector”.
