Mato Grosso farmers face warehouse shortages

Farmers in Mato Grosso are struggling to store grain because of the lack of warehouses. In addition to the more expensive fees on third-party storage units, producers also complain about the barriers to getting financing to construct their own silos and sheds.

The amount for these works is released by the National Bank for Economic and Social Development (BNDES), which is one of the official banks that transfer funds destined for the Harvest Plan. Directors claim that R$1 billion was released for the construction and modernization of warehouses, but that the money has already run out.

It is the institution that operates the Program for the Construction and Expansion of Warehouses (PCA). In this Harvest Plan, the amount was used up in about 1 month and 90% of the operations of this program were operated by small and medium rural producers.

Currently, the state of Mato Grosso has the capacity to store 38 million tons of grain in silos. However, in soybeans and corn alone, the state should produce almost 70 million tons. In addition to insufficient storage capacity, only 30% of the silos are installed on the properties.
