Mato Grosso resumes corn imports for the first time in 4 years

Mato Grosso, the country’s largest corn producer, has resumed importing the grain after four years. From January to August, imports totaled 8 tons, according to IMEA (the Mato Grosso agricultural economics institute).
When compared to the total production in the state – which harvests more than 30 million tons per year – the volume is negligible, but the fact that Mato Grosso is turning to the foreign market again confirms the increase in corn prices in the country. “The amount imported highlights the fact that the price abroad was 2.77% below that registered in the state during the same period,” said the IMEA, in a report.
Between January and August of this year, Brazil imported 1.22 million tons of corn, the second-largest volume for the period in the history of the Foreign Trade Secretariat (SECEX), of the Ministry of Economy. The failure of the two main Brazilian corn crops was a deciding factor for increasing imports.
Paraguay was the main supplier of the corn that Brazil imported in the first eight months of 2021. The country accounted for 71.92% (882,000 tons) of Brazilian imports in the period. IMEA forecasts imports of 2 million tons this year, a new record.
