May Cargo Throughput Data Released for Itajaí-Açu Port Complex

The Itajaí-Açu Port Complex set an impressive cargo throughput at around 1,128,865 tonnes during the month of May, with 584,710 tonnes corresponding to exports and 544,155 tonnes to imports. From January to May, the Port Complex saw a cumulative year-to-date total of 5,481,637 tonnes.

In terms of container operations, the port handled 100,072 TEUs in May, bringing the year-to-date total to 509,203 TEUs.

Ship operations in May included 67 dockings, distributed as follows: 39 at the Private Use Terminal (TUP) at Portonave, 8 at the Port of Itajaí, 4 at TUP TEPORTI, 12 at TUP Barra do Rio, 2 at TUP Braskarne, and 2 at TUP POLY TERMINAIS.

At the Port of Itajaí specifically, total cargo throughput reached 27,961 tonnes in May, with a total of 102,654 tonnes for the year. The Portonave Terminal (Porto de Navegantes) saw 1,059,115 tonnes and 100,064 TEUs in May. From January to May, the complex handled 5,268,240 tonnes and 509,103 TEUs.

The month saw 67 ship maneuvers in Maneuvering Basins 01 and 02, including 24 turns in Basin 01 (adjacent to the berths of the Port of Itajaí and Portonave, due to ongoing works at Berths 01 and 02 of Portonave), 19 turns in Basin 02 (Afonso Wippel Bay – Saco da Fazenda), and 24 maneuvers at the upstream terminals. Year-to-date, 353 rotations were recorded in these basin areas.

Other Private Use Terminals (TUP) also reported operations: Braskarne handled 13,431 tonnes and Teporti managed 24,719 tonnes in the same period.

In May, the Port of Itajaí welcomed the Ultrech Draga from the Port of Santos to continue maintenance dredging work. Additionally, the port received the Roll On Roll Off ship, Eurasian Highway, from Panama, which unloaded 776 vehicles from German manufacturer BMW.

Superintendent of the Port of Itajaí, Fábio da Veiga, highlighted the positive outcomes seen in May and anticipated further improvements. “With JBS (Seara Port Operations) taking over the leased area (berths 01 and 02), we have seen official developments take place. These positive data, even without an operator, indicate that the port’s capacity is set to significantly rebound,” he commented.
