Maya Train railcar transported from Santos to Mexico in special logistics operation

The transport of an out-of-gauge railcar required a special logistics operation between Brazil and Mexico orchestrated by the Allog Group. The passenger car from the Maya Train is part of a set of 42 units built in Mexico and was brought to Brazil for pressure tests in Taubaté, São Paulo. The train can operate at a maximum speed of 160 km/h.

Carlos Souza, Technical Projects Manager at the Allog Group, explains that transporting the cargo demands special logistics, from the cargo’s displacement to its delivery to the final destination in Mexico. The operation requires the use of an extended transport platform and specialized securing. With the shipment cleared by regulatory authorities, the railcar was transferred from the platform to a 72-foot mafi-trailer and loaded onto the RO-RO ship ARC Resolve operated by Wallenius-Wilhelmsen.

As the cargo is over 24 meters long, the railcar required special permits to be transported from the industrial plant in Taubaté to the port of Santos. “In this specific case, it was also necessary to use wooden cradles to support the railcar on the truck, avoiding direct contact of the railcar base with the floor, ensuring the safety and integrity of the cargo,” details Souza.

Another important measure was to align all stages of transportation among the carrier, shipowner, and terminal to ensure the best result for the operation. “The railcar was also completely wrapped in plastic to ensure greater protection, as no container or any other structure is protecting the cargo during transport,” explains the Allog professional.

This practice is expected in the freight of special cargo. With an estimated arrival 18 days after leaving Santos at the Port of Veracruz, the railcar will still travel 350 kilometers to Sahagun, Mexico. “We took care to seek experienced and qualified partners to perform the necessary services for this type of transport. In addition, several alignment meetings were held with all involved in the operation, aiming to analyze all points and mitigate risks,” adds Carlos.

The Maya Train is a 1,525-kilometer project aimed at developing and connecting southeastern Mexico with the Yucatán Peninsula, representing a significant boost to mobility and economic growth in this region. The project will generate 4,500 direct and 7,500 indirect jobs, resulting in significant economic development for the involved community.
