The Brazilian Beef Exporters Association (Abiec), which represents the country’s leading meatpacking companies, expects an increase in beef shipments following the opening of the Surinamese market, as announced by Brazil’s Ministry of Agriculture.
“Beef is now part of an import portfolio focused on food products and live animals. The country imports around 800 tonnes of beef per year, and Brazil is expected to secure a significant share of this supply,” the association said in a statement released today (Feb. 11) regarding Suriname.
Abiec President Roberto Perosa added that every new market opened to Brazilian beef strengthens the product’s competitiveness on the global stage.
According to the federal government, Suriname will begin purchasing live cattle for slaughter, dairy cattle, breeding bulls, beef and beef products, as well as poultry meat and products.
Brazil’s agricultural exports to Suriname totaled $28.5 million in 2024, with “potential for further growth from now on,” the ministry highlighted in an announcement last week.
With Suriname, Brazilian agribusiness has reached 25 new market openings in 2025.
