Mexico opens new tariff-free chicken meat import quota, and Brazil can benefit

Mexico opened a new quota for tariff-free chicken meat imports from countries outside the North American free trade agreement. With that, 30,000 tons can be acquired by Mexico tariff-free, including several cuts with bones including chicken breast, drumsticks, and wings.
According to ABPA (the Brazilian association of animal protein), the measure should benefit Brazil. The organization points out that even with the current 75% tariff, the Mexican market is already an important destination for national exports.
The following chart provides a history of Brazilian chicken exports to Mexico since 2019:

A survey by ABPA shows that between January and May this year, Mexico imported 38,300 tons of Brazilian chicken meat — a volume significantly higher than in the same period in 2020, when 2,300 tons were shipped.
“For almost a decade, we have been building a strong partnership with Mexico, supporting each other especially in times when the local supply faces problems for internal supply. This is a partnership that has been working well, and which should now gain new impetus, influencing the positive balance of Brazilian exports”, says the association’s president, Ricardo Santin, in a statement.
