Mills in the Center-South region extend cane processing period
Dec, 03, 2018 Posted by datamarnewsWeek 201848
According to Brazilian cane industry group Unica, mills in the center-south region have extended cane processing due to the advent of heavy rain. The organ believed that 79 mills were expected to close operations for the season, yet only 31 of them had done so. Cane mills produced 880,000 tons of sugar in the first half of November, down 29.88% YoY and cane crushing reached 21.29m tons for the same period, down 9.18% YoY. Ethanol production was 1.28bn liters in the same period, up 15.37% year-on-year. Of the total, 56.83m tons were allocated for exports.

Rains force Brazilian mills to extend cane processing
SAO PAULO, Nov 27 (Reuters) – Mills in the area have extended cane processing operations for the current crop due to widespread rains over most of Brazil’s center-south region, a major cane industry group said on Tuesday.
Unica had projected two weeks ago that 79 center-south mills would finish operations for the season during the first half of November, but it said on Tuesday that only 31 of them had done so.
Mills will be able to sell or stock less sugar and ethanol than previously expected, pausing production over time. But costs could rise as they delay the release of seasonal workers and extend contracts with third parties in transportation and harvesting operations.
Mills produced 880,000 tonnes of sugar in the first half of November, compared with 958,000 tonnes in the previous two-week period. Cane crushing was at 21.29 million tonnes versus 24.85 million tonnes in the second half of the previous month, Unica said. (See tables below)
Ethanol output was 1.08 billion liters compared with 1.4 billion liters in the previous two-week period.
Mills changed their production mix a bit in favor of sugar, according to the report, a rare move in a season marked by a strong focus on ethanol. Mills allocated 34.03 percent of cane to sugar production early in November versus 30.18 percent in late October.
Below are detailed figures from Unica’s crop report for the first half of November (cane and sugar in million tonnes, ethanol in billion liters, total recoverable sugar-TRS in kg per tonne):
