It wasn’t coffee, sugar cane, soy, or corn. According to Minhas Gerais special agriculture data, fruits were the ones that squandered the state’s export potential. The sale of lemon, papaya, and avocado spearheaded foreign shipments, followed by preserved items, purees, passion fruit, peach, grape, apple, and pineapple juices. Macadamia nuts and Brazil nuts performed well in the state’s foreign trade as well.
The shipment of 1.4 thousand tons of fruits, derivated products, juices, diverse nuts, and chestnuts allowed Minas Gerais to pocket US$ 17.4 million in 2021.
The revenue broke the all-time record indicated by data from the Secretariat of Agriculture, Livestock, and Supply. Despite the effects of COVID-19 and a lack of stimuli to this type of crop in the country, sales of lemons and canned foods were among the main factors that led to the best performance in 24 years.
Compared to 2020, the state saw a 62% increase in value and a 57% increase in volume. Fruit derivatives accounted for half of the total exports, excluding nuts and chestnuts. Another 38% accounted for foreign sales of fruits, 7% of juices, and 5% of nuts and chestnuts.
Another accomplishment of these products was to capture significant market shares in the United States (22%), Holland (20%), Australia (15%), Spain (12%), and the United Kingdom (8%). In total, 43 countries imported fruits grown or processed in Minas Gerais.
Although they still account for a small portion of Minas Gerais’ total exports, which totaled US$ 38.180 billion last year, the fruit and derivatives industry outperformed the overall foreign trade growth rate of the state, measured at 13.7%. As a result, Minas Gerais was ranked second among the exporting states and sixth among Brazilian imports.
