Minas Gerais ponders creating new rail connection to the Port of Açu

Complementary studies to the Minas Gerais Strategic Railway Plan submitted to the state’s Infrastructure Secretariat (Seinfra) in early June indicate that the Unaí-Pirapora railway branch may be connected to Porto do Açu in Rio de Janeiro.
According to the Minas Gerais government, this is an old demand from the northwest of the state.
The study resulted from a technical cooperation agreement between Seinfra and the Port of Açu, which hired the Dom Cabral Foundation (FDC) to analyze the implementation of a rail line connecting the Anchieta branch, in the state of Espírito Santo, to the Vitória a Minas Railroad (EFVM). From there, it would follow to the Port of Açu, in the municipality of São João da Barra in Rio de Janeiro, in addition to other locations that ship cargo to the port terminal.
The study also contemplated the possibility of connecting the Pirapora-Unaí branch line to the Centro Atlântica Railway (FCA), which, after crossing the northern territories of Minas Gerais, continues to the Pedreira do Rio das Velhas yard in the metropolitan region of Belo Horizonte, and then connects with the Vitória a Minas Railroad (EFVM).
The Pirapora-Unaí railroad, 308 kilometers long, is part of the studies conducted by the government of Minas Gerais. Implementing the railway axis and its connection with the current FCA line is of great interest to the state since the Northwest mesoregion is a crucial area that imports fertilizers and exports grains, the so-called solid agricultural bulk.
