Minister of Infrastructure Tarcísio Gomes de Freitas inaugurated three important works in the Port of Santos on November 28th valued at R$ 601 million in investments. The contributions involved the construction of a third railway line between the districts of Valongo and Paquetá, by Portofer; a berthing pier for liquid bulk ships on Barnabé Island, by Ageo Norte; and works to expand and modernize Tecon, by Santos Brasil. Concluding the agenda, the minister followed the first shipment of pulp through the Bracell terminal, auctioned in August 2020.
Third railway line – Built by Rumo (a Portofer shareholder) from January to August this year, the work involved resources in the amount of R$23 million. 1,962 meters of new tracks were installed to support the empty wagon maneuvers, freeing up the two remaining railway lines.
Tecon (Santos Brasil) – The works at Tecon involved investments of R$ 450 million to extend and deepen the pier, completing the first phase of the terminal’s expansion and modernization project. The project adds another 400,000 TEU/year to the terminal’s capacity, raising it to 2.4 million TEU/year.
With this project, Tecon Santos will have the capacity to receive up to 3 New Panamax ships simultaneously. The ships measuring 366 meters in length are the largest vessels planned to operate in the Port of Santos. SPA obtained approval from the Brazilian Navy for the operation of these vessels in February this year.
New pier at Ageo Wharf, on Ilha Barnabé – The construction of the new pier on Ilha Barnabé was carried out by the Ageo Norte terminal and was begun in June 2020. The project adds another mooring berth for liquid bulk at the Port of Santos. It has a depth of 15 meters and a capacity of 80,000 DWT. The work involved resources in the order of R$128 million, increasing the berthing capacity for this type of cargo and enabling levels and performance of berthing in liquid bulk equivalent to the best practices and performances existing in other ports in the Americas and Europe.
The first shipment of pulp by Bracell – Bracell carried out the first shipment of pulp bales at the STS 14A terminal, won in an auction held in August 2020. The ship loaded with 58,000 tons is destined for China.
Bracell has already started the definitive works on the STS 14A terminal, and it has built a temporary structure to guarantee operations during the works. It is investing R$300 million in the project, of which R$35 million was earmarked for access works (permanent extension and railway lines) and R$5 million for the temporary installation, consisting of a 16,000m² warehouse with a storage capacity of 30,000 tons. The temporary structure is the largest canvas shed in Brazil, measuring 383 meters in length.
