On Thursday (August 22), Silvio Costa Filho, Brazil’s Minister of Ports and Airports, inaugurated a new railway overpass and internal roadway at the Port of Santos. This infrastructure project aims to improve the flow of road and rail traffic in the region, enhance safety for trucks accessing local businesses, and stimulate regional economic development.
Minister Costa Filho praised the project, which took 22 months to complete and involved an investment of BRL 139 million. “This investment is part of a larger plan involving BRL 12 billion in federal public funds for various infrastructure projects. The port community can now be assured that we are leaving a lasting legacy for the Port of Santos,” the minister said.
The new overpass connects the pulp cluster with Mário Covas Jr Avenue, a stretch of the right bank perimeter road, adding benefits not only to the port but also to the city of Santos. Anderson Pomini, President of the Santos Port Authority (APS), explained: “The port and the city both benefit from this project. We work by listening to everyone. There will be more infrastructure developments on the right and left banks, deepening of the navigation channel, new phases of the Valongo Park, VTMIS, among others. I thank the minister and President Lula for their support,” Pomini concluded.
As part of the commitment from winning the auction in 2020 for its terminal area, Eldorado Brasil Logística has now wrapped up its construction project by handing over the new overpass and internal roadway to the Santos Port Authority (APS). Flávio da Rocha Costa, Logistics Director at Eldorado Brasil Celulose, celebrated the overpass as a significant advancement for the Port of Santos. “Eldorado Brasil Celulose is proud to enhance port access to the aid of companies, workers, and the Santos community, particularly the cellulose sector, which is becoming increasingly important in the Brazilian economy,” he said.
Costa also highlighted the project’s significance for the region. “Delivering a project of this magnitude represents another step toward improving mobility in the region, supporting the economic development of various sectors. It ensures that the Port of Santos continues to set new records in cargo handling, aligning with the needs of all stakeholders and the entire community,” he added.
Overpass and Internal Roadway Details
The overpass is 350 meters long and nine meters wide, featuring two lanes in one direction toward the Ponta da Praia-Centro stretch of the ring road. It is part of a revitalized roadway system that includes Ismael Coelho de Souza Avenue (internal road), which will now have a one-way direction with access only from the new overpass. The road is properly signposted to ensure traffic safety and smooth port operations. The internal roadway extends three kilometers, with two lanes also in one direction. Smaller vehicles needing access to businesses in this port area will also benefit from this new infrastructure.
