During a recent visit to the Pecém Industrial Port Complex (CIPP) on May 3rd, the Minister of Ports and Airports, Silvio Costa Filho, underscored Pecém’s potential in the green energy transition. Accompanied by National Secretary of Ports, Alex Ávila, the minister was warmly greeted by President Hugo Figueirêdo and Vice-Presidents Rebeca Oliveira (Finance) and Fábio Grandchamp (Operations). The delegation toured the Port of Pecém facilities and gained insights into the Green Hydrogen Hub, along with Pecém’s major investments and upcoming projects.
“It is truly gratifying to visit the Port of Pecém and discuss actions and investments that will be pivotal for the economic growth and development of the region, not just for Ceará but particularly for the Northeast. The Port of Pecém has emerged as a global reference, particularly in the environmental domain. We are increasingly eager to exchange experiences, as I firmly believe that the Port of Pecém will shine in the green hydrogen industry, and we aspire to export this technology across Europe and beyond. This will further catalyze economic growth in the region,” emphasized the minister.
Hugo Figueirêdo emphasized the opportunity to present to the delegation the Pecém Complex’s development strategy centered on the energy transition and the potential impact this movement can have on Ceará, the Northeast, and Brazil at large. “The minister left here deeply convinced that we are witnessing a reality in the making and that Brazil, through Congress and the executive branch, must actively engage in the process of regulating green hydrogen. Recognizing it as an opportunity for Brazil to significantly integrate into the global economy, particularly in the realm of renewable energy and green hydrogen. Consequently, transforming the economy of Ceará, the Northeast, and Brazil itself, ushering in more employment, greener industrialization, and greater work and development prospects for Brazilians,” reiterated the president of Complexo do Pecém.
Also in attendance during the visit were state secretaries Salmito Filho (Economic Development) and Yrwana Albuquerque (Tourism), São Gonçalo do Amarante Mayor Marcelo Teles, Municipal Secretary of Economic Development Magnolia Rocha, Federal Audit Court (TCU) Secretary in Ceará Roberto Sérgio do Nascimento, and Commercial Director of Complexo do Pecém André Magalhães.
H2V Hub
The Pecém Complex comprises three main components: the Industrial Area, housing some of the Brazilian Northeast’s key manufacturing units; Porto do Pecém, a world-class offshore terminal; and ZPE Ceará, Brazil’s inaugural Export Processing Zone, boasting a new area spanning over 1,900 hectares to accommodate fresh investments. It is within this zone that companies producing H2V in Pecém will be situated.
The hub has secured six pre-contracts with firms including AES, Casa dos Ventos, Cactus Energia, Fortescue, Voltalia, and another undisclosed firm, with over 35 memorandums of understanding currently under negotiation. These pre-contracts alone represent US$8 billion in investments by 2030, poised to double the number of direct and indirect jobs in the region, presently standing at 80,000.
