At a virtual fertilizer discussion on the morning of November 23rd, Minister of Agriculture Tereza Cristina said she should travel to Canada in December to talk with fertilizer producers. Canada is an important supplier of these nutrients, especially potassium.
“I had a very fruitful conversation with Nutrien, in partnership with the Brazilian market, and I should travel to Canada, probably in December already, to talk to suppliers,” she said. Faced with concerns surrounding the lack of inputs, last week the minister met with authorities and representatives of the four largest Russian companies in the sector.
Russia, another major global supplier, recently announced the creation of export quotas effective from December for nitrogen and special fertilizers. The country provides 20% of the fertilizers imported by Brazil. According to Tereza Cristina, Russian authorities and local suppliers guaranteed the fulfillment of contracts to the Brazilian delegation. Acron, one of the companies, also said that it would expand supply by 10%.

“We have a ‘green bubble’ going on. We had problems with China, with shutdowns of coal plants, and problems in other countries as well, and this has created insecurity and pretty low expectations”, said the minister.
She said she has reassured producers about the supply of inputs for the current crop and second corn crop. “But we need to be concerned about the 2022/23 harvest so that inputs are delivered as normal”.
