After setting in motion “input diplomacy”, with meetings held in Russia to guarantee the supply of agricultural fertilizers in Brazil in 2022, Minister of Agriculture Tereza Cristina established a task force to discuss the possibility of input shortages. Made up of leaders from the private sector, the group will help to gather information about the supply of fertilizers and pesticides.
On the morning of the 29th, the minister participated in a meeting with the Thematic Chamber of Agricultural Inputs of the Ministry of Agriculture and announced the measures taken by the Ministry to ensure that agricultural inputs are not lacking in the coming harvests.
The supply of fertilizers and pesticides for the summer crop is already guaranteed, but it is still necessary to gather accurate information about the winter crop and planting for 2022/23. The task force organized within the scope of the Thematic Chamber of Agricultural Inputs should construct scenarios and proposals for actions to mitigate any shortage of raw material in agriculture.
The minister is expected to travel to Canada in December to talk with government officials and businessmen in the fertilizer sector, as she did in Moscow recently. There is also concern about the availability of materials for the agricultural machinery industry.
The government intends to announce its national fertilizer plan this year which provides incentives for the expansion of national fertilizer production. Designed by technicians appointed by the Ministry and by the Presidency of the Republic, the plan’s launch depends on getting a green light from the Department of State. Brazil imports 85% of the products it consumes in this area.
