The head of the Uruguayan department of Cerro Largo, José Yurramendi, stated that the dredging of the Mirim Lagoon waterway could be realized this year, potentially making this river route between Uruguay and Brazil a reality by 2025.
In an interview with Radio Carve, the politician explained that the bid announcement for the dredging process, under Brazil’s jurisdiction, was recently signed in the Rivera department. “Following this process, or simultaneously, the port projects will begin to be implemented,” he stated.
“The barge port on the Tacuarí River, called Porto Tacuarí, will bring our region closer to the Atlantic Ocean and the destinations for product marketing,” said Yurramendi, emphasizing the “impressive impact” this will have locally.
Yurramendi anticipates that dredging works, alongside the Porto Tacuarí, will begin to take shape this year. He emphasized, “The crucial aspect is that we have made progress in the documentation for the bidding process, leading to a drastic change in timelines. We hope this will be a year of realization, and by next year, we might see the project in action.”
On the other hand, the department head emphasized that the only project for a port terminal in the area is the Porto Tacuarí. However, he mentioned that “market demand will determine if one port is sufficient or if another is necessary.”
When asked about potential interest in constructing another port, Yurramendi highlighted that there have already been inquiries, including from Brazil, as it “will be beneficial for Rio Grande (do Sul),” given that all goods would ultimately head there.
