For the first time in history, the month-round average of pork exports has exceeded 100,000 tons, as reported by the Brazilian Animal Protein Association (ABPA). According to the organization, pork shipments in August reached 112,800 tonnes (including fresh and processed products). With this figure, the year-to-date average now stands at 100,900 tonnes per month, surpassing the index recorded in the same comparative period (January to August) in 2022, which was 93,300 tonnes.
There was a 3.1% decline in August 2022 compared to the same period last year, with total exports at 116,300 tons. Export revenue was $253.1 million in August, a 5.9% decline from the sum recorded in the eighth month of 2022, which was $269 million.
Year-to-date (January to August), international pork sales have reached 807,000 tonnes, an 11.8% increase compared to exports in the same period of 2022, with 722,800 tonnes. In terms of revenue, the accumulated increase is 19.2%, with $1.916 billion in 2023, compared to $1.607 billion in the previous year.
Among the main export destinations in 2023, China remains the frontrunner with 282,900 tonnes, a 4.5% increase compared to 2022. Rounding up the podium are the Philippines and Hong Kong, both with 78,000 tons (+26.4% for the Philippines and +17.7% for Hong Kong), and Chile with 56,600 tons (+73.7%).
“The month of August marks a new level in pork exports, above 100,000 tons for the first time in the 2023 monthly series. Another notable feature of the month was the success in Mexico, a newly opened market that is already ranked among the top ten destinations for sector exports,” says ABPA President Ricardo Santin.

In the ranking of the largest exporting states, Santa Catarina remains in the lead with 62,700 tons exported in August (+1%), followed by Rio Grande do Sul with 22,900 tons (-19.8%), and Paraná with 15,500 tons (+0.5%).
“China continues to be the main market for Brazilian exporters, but this year we have seen an increasing presence of new markets with significant volumes and high added value. Soon, for example, the first shipments to the Dominican Republic are expected,” highlighted ABPA Market Director Luis Rua.
