MRS Logística filed five requests with the federal government on December 1st for authorization to build railway sections.
The first section runs from Três Lagoas (MS) to Panorama (SP), with a length of 100 km for the transport of pulp. The other stretches would be all in Minas Gerais: from Unaí to Pirapora, with 302 km for the transport of grains; from Varginha to Andrelândia, with 143 km, to transport coffee; from Ouro Preto to Conceição do Mato Dentro, with 213 km, for the transport of iron ore; and from Rio Sobre to Belo Horizonte, 42 km long, also for transporting iron ore.
Today, MRS operates a federal concession with 1,643 kilometers crossing the states of Minas Gerais, Rio de Janeiro, and São Paulo. Asked about the value of the investment in these five projects, MRS has not yet responded.
The possibility of building railroads through authorization from the federal government is in effect due to a Provisional Measure (MP), which has not yet been approved. In parallel, there is also a bill of law authored by the Senate that deals with the new Legal Framework for Railways and includes the possibility of an authorization regime. Under this regime, the company receives approval from the government to build and operate a railway that will be completely private, without any public contribution or risk-sharing with the government.
