MRS Logística and Novelis América do Sul have signed a five-year contract to transport containers by rail with the volume guaranteed. Expectations are that commodities to be transported will mainly be laminated aluminum coil and recyclable aluminum products.
The new contract is part of Novelis’ expansion project for its main Brazilian plant in Pindamonhangaba (SP). With an investment of R$650m, the project foresees an annual increase in the production capacity of aluminum plates by 100,000 tons of recyclable aluminum by 60,000 tons. With the expansion, the plant will have an annual production capacity of approximately 680,000 tons and 450,000 tons for recycling of the metal.
The production capacity increase will be backed by improvements in the company´s logistics infrastructure, with an exclusive terminal to be built to connect Pindamonhangaba´s unit to the MRS Logística line. This serves three of the country’s main ports – Santos, Itaguaí (RJ) and Rio de Janeiro (RJ) and is scheduled to be completed by the end of September. With this project, Novelis will be able to cut carbon dioxide emissions by up to 73% compared to road transport.
