MRS Logística to invest in Rio de Janeiro port expansion

During the Diálogos RJ seminar, Gustavo Bambini, Director of Institutional Relations at MRS Logística—a company that operates freight trains—pointe out a series of investments the company will undertake in Rio de Janeiro in exchange for a 30-year concession extension starting from the end of the current contract in 2026. The plan was approved by the National Land Transport Agency (ANTT) last year. One of the main investments will focus on modernizing the loading and unloading operations of iron ore for export at the Port of Rio. The MRS concession is under the federal government.
Currently, MRS trains do not run directly through the port to the vicinity of merchant ships, as this asphalt path is only accessible by trucks. The plan envisions an investment of R$150 million in structural improvements to lay tracks along this route. The expectation is for these interventions to be completed by the end of 2027, providing increased efficiency and rationality to the process. A single train can transport the same amount of cargo as 140 trucks.
“At present, the train stops in the external area, at one of the gates of the Dockyards, in Caju, near the National Institute of Traumatology and Orthopedics (Into). The cargo is then transferred to the interior of the terminal. From there, trucks have to transport the ore to an unloading area within the customs zone. The idea is for this entire procedure to be conducted via rail. We are in the detailed project phase. What we can already assure is that the preserved warehouses will be maintained,” explained Rosa Cassar, General Manager of Institutional Relations at MRS.
The company’s investment program also outlines the overhaul of level crossings in Pinheiral, Itaguaí, Nova Iguaçu, Belford Roxo, São João de Meriti, and Mesquita over the coming years. This is aimed at reducing the risks of accidents involving pedestrians and vehicles.
