MRS Logistica to invest R$9.7 bi in railway works and improvements

The new concession contract for the railway managed by MRS Logística foresees investments of R$9.7 billion and 280 railway works in 51 municipalities, including the segregation of 90 kilometers of shared tracks with CPTM passenger trains in the metropolitan region of São Paulo. In accessing the Port of Santos (SP), the cargo handling capacity will increase from the current 51 million to 110 million tons.
Recently approved by ANTT (the national land transport agency), the advanced contract renewal was sent on October 21 to a final inspection by the federal audit court, which has already approved the model. The lease expires in 2026 and must be renewed in advance, for 30 years. After the court’s conclusive approval, the process goes to the Ministry of Infrastructure, which is authorized to sign the new contract.
“We expect the signature for the first four months of 2022”, said the president of MRS, Guilherme Segalla de Mello, to Valor. Most of the investments negotiated with the government in exchange for the extension – R$ 5.4 billion – go towards improvements within the network itself, such as the purchase of rolling stock (wagons and locomotives) and modernizations to meet performance criteria established in the new contract.
