MRS Logística and Wabtec Corporation have formalized an agreement for the acquisition of 30 new locomotives from the Evolution series. The deal is valued at approximately BRL 500 million, with the first deliveries scheduled for 2024. The purchase is part of the railway fleet renewal strategy and reinforces the nearly 30-year relationship between the two companies.
Launched in 2022, the ES44ACi model locomotives are equipped with Evolution Series Diesel engines, which produce 4,500 horsepower with just 12 cylinders. The four-stroke internal combustion electronic engine with turbocharging provides greater energy efficiency and lower emissions, thanks to a design focused on combustion thermal efficiency combined with a dual intake air cooling system.
According to Guilherme Segalla de Mello, president of MRS Logística, fleet renewal is crucial for the company to achieve even greater efficiency and safety in cargo transportation.
“By using a modern fleet of locomotives, we promote better energy efficiency in rail transport and contribute to improving our country’s logistics. The railway is more sustainable than other logistics alternatives, yet we strive to minimize emissions in our operations, thus contributing to sustainable development. The partnership is aligned with the regulatory commitments made by MRS with the Federal Government, in a joint effort between the public and private sectors, which generates more efficiency for the mode while fostering the railway industry,” he says.
The advanced technology of the ES44ACi is aligned with the global push towards more sustainable practices. The locomotive provides about a 5% reduction in emissions compared to its predecessor, the AC4400. The high-strength materials used in production also significantly increase maintenance intervals by about 28%, reducing operational costs over the locomotive’s lifecycle.
“These state-of-the-art ES44ACi locomotives offer high performance and greater reliability while reducing CO2 emissions,” says Danilo Miyasato, president and regional leader of Wabtec Latin America. “This long-term contract underscores our vision for a more environmentally friendly railway network for Brazil,” he emphasizes.
