Data from the consultancy Alphaliner indicate that Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) completed the purchase of 207 second-hand ships in 22 months.
According to market sources, the most recent acquisition was of five vessels with a capacity of just over 8,000 TEUs, controlled by US investment manager Seamax Capital Management.
The report indicated that the vessels acquired were the 9,038 TEU Seamax Fairfield, built in 2006, in addition to the 8,600 TEU Seamax Greenwich, delivered in 2004, as well as three unidentified units from 8,300 to 8,400 TEU.
The vessels are already in service for MSC under a charter, with contracts expiring in 2024-2025. Currently, the carrier pays between $31,000 and $42,000 per ship every day. The shipowner did not reveal the selling price of these vessels.
The carrier also recently purchased the 5,042 TEU Felixstowe Bridge, which was put into service in 2005, and the 4,800 TEU capacity Sino Bridge, built a year earlier and delivered, like the other vessel, to Sinokor.
The 207 ships acquired by MSC add up, according to Alphaliner, to a total capacity of 785,000 TEUs, just below all the 20-foot containers that HMM can mobilize with its fleet, which reaches 818,000 TEUs.
