National port handling grows 9.7% in the first two months

Statistics management and performance evaluation data released on April 12 by ANTAQ shows that the national port sector (state-managed ports + authorized and leased terminals) handled 174.3 million tons in the first two months of 2021, growing 9.7% compared to the same period last year.
Private terminals handled 119.5 million tons in the first two months, growing 11.8% compared to the first two months of 2020. State-managed ports handled 54.8 million tons, an increase of 5.2 %.
The Ponta da Madeira (MA) Maritime Terminal was the facility that handled the most cargo in the first two months of this year: 28.4 million tons, an increase of 3.4% compared to the first two months of last year. The Port of Santos (SP) came in second place, with 15.6 million tons handled and a growth of 6.6%. The Angra dos Reis Waterway Terminal (RJ) came in third place, handling 11 million tons, a 7.0% increase.
Solid Bulk
Most of the cargo handled was solid bulk, with 93.6 million tons handled, a growth of 7.4% compared to January and February 2020. The port sector also handled 50.9 million tons of liquid and gaseous bulk, which represented an increase of 12.9%. Ports handled 20.4 million tons of container cargo, a growth of 9.2%. A further 9.3 million tons of general cargo were handled, representing a growth of 17%.
By commodity group, iron ore led the handling. The port sector handled 59.3 million tons of iron ore in the first two months of 2021. This was an increase of 10.6% compared to the same period in 2020. Behind iron ore were mineral fuels, with 52.6 million tons handled, representing a growth of 14.4%. Container handling also increased, with 20.3 million tons handled, up 9.2%.
February
The port sector handled 86 million tons in February alone, an increase of 4.5% compared to the same month of 2020.
Navigation
117.3 million tons were handled by long-distance shipping in the first two months of 2021, an increase of 9.7% over the same period in 2020. The total cargo handled via coastal shipping was 47.2 million tons, an increase of 12.4%. Inland transport (pure inland navigation, long-haul, and cabotage on inland roads) decreased by 5%. A total of 14.9 million tons were transported.
Containers
According to the survey carried out by ANTAQ, container handling reached 1.8 million TEU in the first two months of 2021, an increase of 10.4%. Public ports handled 1.2 million TEU, while authorized terminals handled 633,7100 TEU. The Port of Santos handled 557,800 TEU in January and February this year, growing 10.7%.
